Metro School is Taking Advantage of 'Computer Science Education Week'

There she found about 50 girls inside learning more about computer science coding as part of Computer Science Education Week.

According to Code.org, its Hour of Code campaign has reached more than 10 percent of all students worldwide, and the campaign "provides the leading curriculum for K-12 computer science in the largest school districts in the United States". The hour is an introduction to computer science to show the girls that anyone can learn the basics. So far, more than 450 million students have signed up.

This week, Microsoft is using its retail stores to host Hour of Code workshops, deploying its government affairs team to work with legislators to promote coding, and hosting educational events at its sales offices. Through online competitions, students and teachers participating in Computer Science Education Week can win the chance to video chat directly with public figures like the Golden State Warriors' Stephen Curry or the Seattle Seahawks' Russell Wilson. Computer Science Education Week also recognizes the birthday of computing pioneer Admiral Grace Murray Hopper, who was instrumental in the creation of the first computer-language translator, which led to one of the first business-oriented computer languages, COBOL. This year's Computer Science Education Week started today and runs through December 10.

Partovi also stressed that in order to increase the number of female and minority students participating in computer science classes, high schools should allow computer science classes to count toward a student's required classes to graduate, rather than counting it as an elective course.
