UK National Security Authorities Banned from Using Kaspersky Lab Software

The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), part of GCHQ, has written to all government departments alerting them to the risks of using the anti-virus products for systems related to national security. US Acting Homeland Security Secretary Elaine Duke ordered all the country's federal departments and agencies to stop using Kaspersky Lab products within the next 90 days, saying the company's products allegedly represented a threat to security. Kaspersky Lab fully agrees that supply chain risk management is critical to information security, and therefore, we look forward to continuing our dialogue with the NCSC to develop a framework that can independently verify and provide assurance of the integrity of Kaspersky Lab's products and services.

A spokesman for Kaspersky told IBTimes UK the company was very "disappointed" that Barclays had discontinued its offer to its customers.

In July Kaspersky was similarly been removed from the United States governments approved vendors list after concerns were raised that the software provided by the vendor could allow the Kremlin access to the U.S. government's secure computer systems.

Specifically, the Martin warns that systems containing information classified as "SECRET and above", while some systems containing material classified as Official, should not use products that originated in Russian Federation.

News reports have since linked Kaspersky software to an alleged theft of cybersecurity information from the U.S. National Security Agency.

Theresa May said last month that Russian Federation was attempting to "weaponise information" and threaten the global order.

In September, the US government barred agencies from using Kaspersky products after expressing concern that the company could have links to the Russian government or Russian spy agencies.

In another post, NCSC security expert Ian Levy reminded staff that while foreign hackers pose a threat, the biggest security risk remained out-of-date software, poorly configured networks, and loss of passwords.
