Governor to call election to fill Conyers' seat

Conyers left Washington early last week for Detroit, where he was hospitalized for a stress-related illness.

Conyers, 88, announced Tuesday morning during an interview on Praise 102.7 FM that he is retiring and is endorsing his son, John Conyers III, to replace him.

Conyers lawyer, Arnold Reed, said the departure was effective immediately. Ian Conyers, a MI state senator and the grandson of Conyers' brother, said he also plans to run for the seat held by his 88-year-old great-uncle.

In the days following the allegations, Conyers, who is the longest serving current House member, had fiercely denied the allegations against him and vowed to fight to clear his name.

The news comes after Conyers' great-nephew, 29-year old MI state Senator Ian Conyers, told CBS News' Jonathan Blakely he would be running for the elder Conyers' seat.

"I think there should be a complete disclosure and revealing to all the citizens in the country what federal legislatures are doing or not doing - and any cost that may have incurred as a result of that", Conyers said. The controversy began when BuzzFeed reported last month that Conyers' office paid a former staffer a $27,000 settlement after she alleging she fired after rebuffing Conyers' sexual advances.

A number of fellow Democrats have called on Conyers to resign, including Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and fellow Michigan Rep. Dan Kildee.

News of Conyers' departure comes amid a firestorm of sexual misconduct allegations made against other members of Congress, including Sen.

"It is apparent that if we're going to raise this unholy and unlawful guillotine, calling for the head of John Conyers, then in fairness we must begin with the president of the United States".

The notice was leaked by a family member of Conyers who is expecting to run for the seat, the New York Times reports. Another former staff member accused Conyers of sexual misconduct and filed a lawsuit, but dropped the suit when the court refused to seal the case.

At least two other women who worked for him have accused him of sexual misconduct.

They said the congressman is entitled to due process. He added that he hopes his retirement will be viewed in the "larger perspective" of his more than 50 years as a lawmaker. "This goes with the issue of politics, the game of politics which we're in".

Calls for his resignation grew after news broke detailing a woman's graphic sexual harassment claim against Conyers alleging repeated propositions for sex. I'm a co-sponsor on all of them.
