The supermoon on the 31st will also feature a total lunar eclipse visible in western North America. And they weren't disappointed by what they saw.

The supermoon has prompted red-alerts by NIWA for king tides this week. However, it's a fantastic opportunity for photographing the moon, and if you're planning on doing so, using a tripod or some other stable mount for your camera will give you the best shot at a clear photo. When two full moons occur in the same month, the second is sometimes called a blue moon or, in this case, a super blue moon.

New Zealanders took to vantage points to see the only supermoon of 2017, the biggest and brightest supermoon in 70 years. You obviously can't tell from just watching it, but the moon orbits the Earth in a slightly oval-shaped path. NASA research scientist Noah Petro said.

Astrophysicists say the Supermoon often "sounds far more impressive than it actually is."

The time between perigees (an anomalistic month, about 27.555 days) does not align very well with the time between full moons (a synodic month, about 29.531 days).

The Cold Moon appeared 14 per cent larger and 30 per cent brighter than usual across the planet.

"If a 16.1 inch pizza is "super" to you, compared with a 16.0 inch pizza, then we have an issue of vocabulary.:" Tyson wrote in a follow-up Tweet. So most full moons occur at a point on the moon's orbit anywhere but perigee.
