The Congress has a different culture and heritage.

Meanwhile, this was not the first time that Aiyar's remarks would have put Congress in a spot.

Speaking to reporters in New Delhi, Aiyar, reacting to Gandhi's remarks, said: "Why was PM taking a jibe at Congress and Rahul Gandhi at inauguration of a Centre on Baba Saheb Ambedkar?"

"Mujhko lagta hai ki ye aadmi bahut neech kisam ka aadmi hai, isme koi sabhyata nahi hai". So I used "low person", I translated "low" in my mind. "He is not civilised and in a situation like this, there is no need to practise such dirty politics".

As Aiyar's remarks that Modi was a "neech aadmi" (low-life) in the context of his criticism of the Congress vis-a-vis B.R. Ambedkar snowballed, the Prime Minister referred to it in an election meeting in Surat and attacked the Congress leader, saying he had called him a "neech jaati" (low caste).

Congress has suspended Mani Shankar Aiyar from the the primary membership of the party for his "neech" comments made for Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

Prasad alleged that Aiyar targetted Modi because the latter had questioned the delayed conferring of Bharat Ratna - the country's highest civilian award - on Dalit icon Ambedkar and Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel.

Modi said, "I beg to the people of India- please let them be. I am an ordinary worker of Congress, have not even been asked to campaign in Gujarat so why such a uproar over my comment?"

"Are we going to integrate them (Muslims)? If anything- we will answer them for their mindset with our votes on 9th and 14th". Hence, Congress had to face humiliating defeat.

In trying to defend his party against the "dynast" tag, Aiyar had said, "When Shah Jahan came in the place of Jahangir did any election happen?"

More or less, Rahul has succeeded in his strategy as BJP was also hitting back Congress only on these issue.

In the run-up to the 2014 general election, Aiyar, a former diplomat, had sparked a similar controversy with his remarks about Modi.

Learning lessons from the mistakes of past, Rahul rebuked Aiyar and hours later Congress suspended him from party's primary membership.

"The Congress Party has challenged the weaker and backward sections of India by calling the Prime Minister as neech". "BJP and PM routinely use filthy language to attack the Congress party".
