Shooter down, at least 2 people shot at New Mexico high school

"Thankfully our teacher always locks the door no matter what. No other injuries reported", state police said in a tweet Thursday.

Authorities say the shooter at Aztec High School in Aztec is also dead.

The Sheriff's Office wrote on Facebook that the school was put on lockdown and the students evacuated. Students were taken to another location. Nearby schools were briefly locked down during the incident.

A crowd of nervous parents gathered outside City Hall in the moments after the shooting to wait for more information as officers tried to reassure them about the safety of their children.

Local and federal authorities are investigating what led to the shooting and did not immediately release any details about the circumstances.

Police have not yet publicly identified the shooter or the two students who were killed at Aztec High School in northwestern New Mexico.

The school is in the Four Corners region and is near the Navajo Nation.

"Our hearts break for the victims and their families", New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas said in a statement. Thursday's shooting appears to be the most serious in a New Mexico school in years. It was also unclear from the report whether the three were injured or killed.

The Bloomfield Police Department is asking parents to stay away from the school until further notice.
