Tennessee hires Jeremy Pruitt as next head coach

An unprecedented coaching search has finally come to an end at Tennessee.

It looks like Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt will be the new head coach for the Tennessee Vols.

Tennessee has hired Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt as its new head coach, the school confirmed on Thursday. However, he left prior to Alabama's appearance in the national championship game against Clemson.

Pruitt is in his second season as the Alabama defensive coordinator. Alabama led the nation in scoring defense and ranked second in total defense previous year.

Booker is one of the few reasons to watch the team play as now constructed because he's blossoming into an offensive star. He has scored 38 and 46 points in his previous two games and is averaging 24.5 points per game.

Pruitt has always been part of a victor dating back to his early days with Alabama, but now he has been tasked with putting together plans, strategies and figuring out not only a way to defeat the Crimson Tide, but return the Volunteers to the top of the mountain. In 2007, he would become a defensive assistant under Nick Saban. As a DC, he's probably one of the best I've been coached by. He joins Georgia's Kirby Smart, South Carolina's Will Muschamp and newly-hired Jimbo Fisher at Texas A&M. Pruitt would serve as an assistant under Saban until 2009 before heading to Tallahassee in 2013 to serve as the Seminoles defensive coordinator. The All-American defensive back said he knows the career assistant Pruitt would make a great head coach. Twice Pruitt has been named a finalist for the Broyles Award, which goes annually to the top college football assistant coach. Pruitt has also coached 11 first-team All-Americans. Fulmer took over for John Currie, who was suspended just eight months into the job as Tennessee investigates whether it can fire him for cause.

Tennessee saw a coach almost get hired, then decided against it after fans protested the decision. Tennessee struck out landing Dan Mullen, former Mississippi State and now Florida head coach, and once that deal fell through, Currie reportedly offered the Tennessee coaching job to Ohio State defensive coordinator Greg Schiano last Sunday.

Pruitt was also a recent finalist for the Mississippi State head coaching position, but the Bulldogs hired Penn State offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead on November 28.
