"For a young girl picking up a rugby ball for the first-time next season, she will now have a clear and accessible pathway to represent her country through the Wallaroos and Australian Women's Sevens team".

Australia, which co-hosted the inaugural Rugby World Cup with New Zealand in 1987 and staged it alone in 2003, will bid to host the women's World Cup in 2021 and the men's edition in 2027.

Castle and Cheika met briefly after her appointment, but the CEO said she wouldn't be afraid to ask questions of the national mentor if necessary.

"I am really proud and excited about this competition launching next year and what this means for the game in Australia", Parry said.

Rugby Australia Chairman, Cameron Clyne said Castle was the standout applicant from a list of over 200 candidates which included sporting and business leaders from across the globe.

"Having followed rugby closely for over 30 years and having worked in the New Zealand and Australian sporting environments for the past 10, there is no doubt Australian rugby has a clear global and domestic offering for both male and female athletes that can be further developed and strengthened". "My experience in rugby league was very strong; I don't expect my experience in rugby union to be any different".

Ms Castle, an Australian-born New Zealander, had previously headed New Zealand's national netball body, as well as a team in Australia's National Rugby League.

One of Castle's first priorities will be to forge a working relationship with Wallabies coach Michael Cheika, who is renowned for being a volatile character - highlighted by his recent television interview with an English reporter following Australia's loss to England at Twickenham.

"So we know that we're in a race and we have to be a sport of choice".

Castle, who has been CEO at Netball New Zealand and at the Canterbury Bulldogs in Australia's National Rugby League, will replace Bill Pulver on January 15.

Before that she headed up Netball New Zealand.

Given the changes to that competition, the biggest of which was the removal of Western Force amid an ugly legal battle, the game can not afford to continue to slip at the provincial level.

"At the end of the day, everyone loves winning and that's what we want to see".
