How healthy is your state? The disparities are stark

MA is the healthiest state in America, according to a recent report.

Across all states, the report found that mortality rates are increasing. That is the largest improvement for any state since 2012 but is still 2.5 percent higher than the national average of 17.1 percent.

The report also noted that the number of adults in MA who smoke dropped from 18.2 percent of all adults to 13.6 percent over the last five years.

The 28th annual America's Health Rankings survey assesses each state based on 35 measures related to behavior, community and environment, policy, clinical care and outcomes data.

Cardiovascular deaths increased for the second consecutive year, with the rate among African Americans significantly higher than the rate among whites, Hispanic- and Asian-Americans, and Native Americans.

Colorado remains one of the least obese states in the country.

The state-by-state ranking is aimed at highlighting positive and negative health trends.

Rhode Island, Massachusetts, New York and CT have more than 200 primary care physicians per 100,000 people, compared to fewer than 100 physicians per 100,000 people in Utah and Idaho.

America's Health Rankings, the longest-running assessment of the nation's health on a state-by-state basis, is the product of a partnership between United Health Foundation and the American Public Health Association.

MA ranks as the healthiest state in 2017 for the first time, followed by Hawaii (2), Vermont (3), Utah (4) and CT (5).

The Bay State is the healthiest in the USA, based on 35 measures based on behavior, environment and clinical care data, according to the annual report. The 2017 report also ranked Massachusetts No. 1 for the health of women and children.
