The Israeli Air Force hit the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip earlier Wednesday, lightly wounding three people, after Palestinians fired at southern Israel, the military and Gaza security officials said.

Soldiers stationed at Nahal Oz military base, along the border with Gaza, opened live fire at Palestinian protesters who approached the border fence, injuring four of them, including two seriously. In response to the rocket fire, the IDF targeted a number of terrorist infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.

The Israeli military said late Monday it struck Hamas positions in the northern strip overnight in retaliation for a rocket fired at the southern city of Ashkelon, which Israel's Iron Dome missile defense system shot down.

A network of Gaza tunnels allowed Hamas gunmen to blindside Israel's superior forces during the 2014 war and the Israelis, with USA help, have since stepped up work on counter-measures.

It did not say where the rocket fell or report any casualties.

Late on Tuesday, the military said that an undefined "projectile" was sacked from Gaza towards southern Israel.

"The IDF holds the Hamas terror organization accountable for this hostile act originating in the Gaza Strip", said the IDF following its response.

It also came as Palestinian factions tried to meet Sunday's deadline for an Egyptian-mediated handover of Gaza by Hamas to Western-backed President Mahmoud Abbas after a decade's schism.
