Shame on Democratic Senators Kirsten Gillibrand, Charles Schumer,, for their precipitate rush to judgment of Senator Al Franken.

But Dayton has been under pressure from some in the party, to not do that, but to appoint someone who wants to run for seat and complete Franken's unexpired term.

"Though I never anticipated this moment", Smith told reporters, "I am resolved to do everything I can to move Minnesota forward, and I will be a fierce advocate in the United States Senate for the economic opportunity and fairness".

Mary admitted she did not know much about Smith, but said, "I just sure hope we get good people in there".

Smith was widely viewed as Dayton's preference to fill the seat.

"As a passionate pro-life mom and legislator, I'm deeply disappointed that Minnesota's next US senator will be someone who has such a profound disregard for the sanctity of life", state Rep.Mary Franson, R-Alexandria, said. She lives in Minneapolis with her husband; they have two grown sons.

She was Dayton's chief of staff during his first four-year term, then became his running mate in the 2014 election, replacing first-term Lt. Gov. Yvonne Prettner Solon.

By 2015, that figure had dropped to 3.3 million uninsured kids, according to the Medicaid and CHIP Payment and Access Commission . By 2015, 18 years after its enactment, 3.3 million children in the USA were without health insurance.

"And I believe the way to do that is to be the best senator I can be", Smith said. Franken said last Thursday that he will resign "in the coming weeks", but has not yet set a departure date.

She has been a more visible lieutenant governor than her predecessors.

Franken had spent the past few weeks pleading for forgiveness in response to the accusations. At least eight women have made allegations of sexual misconduct against the former comedian.

Smith, a Democrat like Dayton and Franken who is the governor's confidant and trusted former chief of staff, will campaign to keep the seat in the 2018 election. "He's our governor and I'm very proud of him".

Mrs. Smith is going to Washington.

By naming Smith, Dayton creates uncertainty for the state Senate.

The November 2018 election will draw national attention to Minnesota as the U.S. Senate will have 51 Republicans and 49 Democrats after Democrat Doug Jones won an Alabama special election Tuesday.
