You better hurry if you want a Christmas tree this year

If you opt for a living tree, planning ahead is the key to success.

Christmas trees - including the Monterey pine, which is the most commonly grown variety in California - are a bit less water-intensive than fruit trees, Wunderlich said. It's easy to get distracted or let things fall by the wayside, but here's one chore that you really can't skip: watering your Christmas tree. Lynn Wunderlich, who works with Christmas tree farmers in her role as farm adviser for the University of California Cooperative Extension, said many people assume the trees are cut down in forests and stolen from nature. They absorb carbon dioxide and other gases, and in turn, emit oxygen. The National Fire Protection Agency reported that between 2011 and 2015, US fire departments responded to an average of 200 home fires started by Christmas trees each year. Water the tree monthly or more, especially if winter is dry, windy and warm.

- Make sure the tree is not blocking your path to your door.

Before purchasing the tree, consider the size and weight of what you can handle. Approximately four days before moving the tree indoors, place it in this holding area to prep it for the move into the home. Each option has its benefits and drawbacks.

One of my co-workers shared with me an online article about finding the flawless Christmas tree and the warning about the number of "bugs" it might contain.

Make sure the tree is at least three feet away from any heat source, like fireplaces, radiators, candles, heat vents or lights.

"Over the course of time, there is a break-even point", Paddock said. Paddock said six years is probably a more reasonable guess.

If you are still thinking about getting a fresh tree, keep in mind that there are several local farms producing trees that are either precut, or can be cut by you. "Either the kids made them, they are the ones that Don and I made as kids, some from each of our parent's trees, and one from his grandparent's tree, too!" At the Delta Gamma Center Charity Christmas Tree Lot, there were only around 50 trees left Wednesday evening.

Either way, the environmental impact is not particularly significant in the grand scheme of things. "We used to go every year to the same guy in Indian Trail", says Queen's Grant teacher Jordan Frederick.
