4 powerlifters killed, world champion Saksham Yadav injured in Delhi auto crash

The accident took place at around 4 a.m. near Alipur village, close to Delhi's Singhu border with Haryana.

"This morning six athletes were going from Delhi to Panipat in their auto, carrying their powerlifting kits, when they met with the accident at Alipur village, near Singhu border between Delhi and Haryana", a police official said.

Four powerlifting players from Delhi were killed when the vehicle they were in hit a road divider and crashed into a pole on the Delhi-Chandigarh highway today morning.

The police said that the other deceased have been identified as Tikamchand alias Tinka (27), Yogesh (24), Saurabh (18), Harish Roy (20).

All the four players died on the spot, the reports said. A sixth weightlifter (19) was battling for life.

Yadav had suffered multiple head injuries and had first been taken to the Max Super Speciality Hospital before being shifted to AIIMS at 9.30am.

According to the police, the auto first hit a divider and then crashed into an electricity pole.

Bottles of liquor were reportedly found in the auto.

"The speed of the auto was very high".

The mishap took place at around 4 am when the sportsmen were returning to Delhi in their Maruti Suzuki Swift DZire vehicle after attending an athletic meet in Panipat. "So the possibility of drunken driving is there", he added.
