Mr Wolff's book, Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House, paints an unflattering portrait of Mr Trump, claiming the President's staff - and even his family members - regard him as "like a child".

Bannon said Donald Trump Jr was "both a patriot and a good man", who had been "relentless in his advocacy for his father". He's referring to comments that Bannon had made in the Wolff book, saying that a meeting Trump campaign officials and a Russian lawyer during the presidential campaign were "treasonous" and "unpatriotic". "To reiterate, those comments were not aimed at Don Jr".

The very public apology was just the latest fallout from the release of "Fire and Fury", in which Wolff claims, after having had access to the West Wing during the first months of the Trump administration, that numerous president's top aides and confidants consider him paranoid, inept and even unfit to hold office.

"I'm with him nearly every day", Mr. Pompeo said on "Fox News Sunday".

"The book is best understood as a work of poorly written fiction". Ronald Reagan had the same problem and handled it well.

Mr. Trump returned back home to the White House Sunday morning following a retreat to Camp David with GOP leaders in Congress.

Stephen Miller, senior policy adviser for President Donald Trump, battled with CNN "State of the Union" host Jake Tapper on Sunday during a lengthy discussion on a myriad of topics.

"It is tragic and unfortunate that Steve would make these grotesque comments", Miller said on CNN.

President Trump praised adviser Stephen Miller and blasted CNN following a heated appearance by Miller with CNN's Jake Tapper that at times devolved into an on-air shouting match.

When Tapper got to the president's mental fitness, Miller turned it into a full-on slap of CNN, saying there was a "crisis of legitimacy" and a "toxic environment" at the network. The president is engaged.

"We talk about some of the most serious matters facing America and the world, complex issues, the president is engaged, he understands the complexity, he asks really hard questions of our team at CIA", Pompeo said on "Fox News Sunday".

Trump also tweeted that throughout his life, "my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart".

Mr Wolff said members of the Trump White House speak openly about the option, saying things like: "We're not at a 25th Amendment level yet", or "Ok, this is a little 25th Amendment".

Miller said that point was true, calling the president a, 'A self-made billionaire who revolutionized reality TV and who has changed the course of our politics'.

Wolff has said the book was based on White House access, conversations with Trump and interviews with senior staffers, including Bannon.
