Water main break snarls JFK airport

The FAA said Sunday afternoon that the average flight delay was more than 81 minutes at JFK Airport.

Around 3:30 p.m., the airport announced via Twitter that global flights into Terminal 4 had been shut down.

Worldwide flights into Terminal 4 were suspended and the water main break occurred just before 2pm (1900 GMT), said a spokesman for the Port Authority of NY and New Jersey that runs the airport.

But tempers have flared among furious travellers, forced to sleep on the floor of terminals, with others stranded on planes for hours waiting to access a gate and massive delays in baggage claim.

As of Sunday, a number of flights continued to be delayed or canceled at the airport.

Tired travelers faced hours-long waits on the tarmac and additional hours-long waits to retrieve their baggage once they were in the terminal, NBC New York reported.

Teacher Jessica Holden, who was returning to NY on a Thomas Cook flight from Manchester, England, said: 'The fight was due to land at 1.55pm, it touched down at 4pm but we were sat on tarmac until 6pm.

"Frigid temperatures continue to cause equipment failures and slower than normal operations".

JFK Airport has been plagued with severely delayed flights and baggage claim malfunctions, causing travel horror stories for thousands of customers.
