According to the Red Cross, severe winter weather has had a tremendous impact on blood donations.

It's not only the local hospitals that need blood, many hospitals across the country are also in need of donations.

January is National Blood Donor Month, and Central Blood Bank is putting out a call to donors to help save lives during this time of extreme need.

While all blood types are urgently needed, there is a more critical need for types O-negative and B-negative, as well as platelets.

Donors can schedule an appointment by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting or calling 1-800-733-2767. They have to be transfused within five days, Lewis said.

Type O negative is the universal blood type and what emergency room personnel reach for when there is no time to determine the blood type of patients in the most serious situations. A blood donor card or driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Students can donate once they're 16 years old and a lot of blood comes from high schools.

Eligible donors with types O, A negative and B negative blood are urged to make a Power Red donation, where available. Daily, the organization collects more than 13,000 blood donations for patients at 2,600 USA hospitals.
