Here's How Frozen Alligators Survived Last Week's Winter Blast

Videos showing the alligators "just hanging out in the water", have garnered tens of thousands of views since they were published over the weekend. They can live in water as cold as 40 degrees.

And, when the weather warmed up, the alligators went right back to sunbathing to increase their internal body temperatures.

The Shallotte River Swamp Park in Ocean Isle Beach posted a series of YouTube videos, explaining how their rescued reptiles survive in cold temperatures.

They stick their mouths out of the water and allow the water to freeze around them.

The ice in finally beginning to melt away, and soon these guys will be saying "see ya later alligator" to hibernation and the cold temps.

How have alligators dealt with the freezing temperatures that hit our area? The folks at Shallotte River Swamp Park used a series of Facebook posts to show the public how these reptiles survive the frosty conditions

The "bomb cyclone" that froze the eastern seaboard of the U.S. last week forced many to take extreme measures to stay warm and stay alive, including a group of rather inventive alligators in North Carolina.

As for what happens if someone steps on a frozen alligator, experts said it's not likely the animal will react.

Now you know. See ya later, alligator! But that's no problem, according to the park's accompanying blog post.

A Carolina Coastal Review study suggested the farthest west they might appear would be Richmond County, though none have been recorded living naturally past eastern Scotland County.
