United States President Donald Trump has said he would beat talk show trailblazer Oprah Winfrey if she ran against him in 2020.

Winfrey, in September and October, publicly dismissed the notion of seeking the nation's highest office, though she noted that Trump's victory made her rethink the requirements of the office.

"I would say, 'Donald, I'm with her, '" Winfrey said to applause.

"I like Oprah. I don't think she's going to run".

"Yeah, I'll beat Oprah", Mr Trump said.

And though any Democrat can count on the support of the mainstream media that is already at war with the president, Oprah's open flattery of the press in her speech is a reminder that she will be operating with another built-in advantage that will make it even more hard for primary rivals to attack her.

Even Trump's daughter Ivanka endorsed Oprah's message, if not a political future, in a tweet Monday.

In receiving a lifetime achievement award from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, Winfrey spoke of her humble upbringing and her childhood respect for civil rights heroes. "Just saw @Oprah's empowering and inspiring speech at last night's #GoldenGlobes". After a moving tribute to Recy Taylor - a black woman who was gang-raped by six white men in 1944, became a central figure in the early civil rights movement, and passed away just ten days ago - she launched into a monologue about the importance of the global #MeToo movement, draining the salty tear-ducts of all of the ceremony's attendees, and everyone who tuned in.

"Oprah", Trump replied. "Oprah would always be my first choice". He has also been accused by multiple women of sexual misconduct, though he has vehemently denied the allegations.

The 64-year-old media mogul has become a cultural phenomenon. Over 30 years, she became the face of television talk shows, starred and produced feature films, and began her own network.

King says she herself has even been contacted by some "very important" people, saying that they would work for Winfrey's campaign, should she decide to run. "I probably wouldn't do it, Oprah".

Winfrey's presidential history also extends to the previous administration.

On the show Tuesday morning, King said she "was up talking to [Winfrey] very late last night". I will quit my job and campaign for her. I probably wouldn't, but I do get exhausted of seeing what's happening with this country.

It's true that if she enters the political arena, Winfrey's status as a universally beloved figure will be revoked. That could soften what Palmieri describes as an enduring resistance among some voters to women with political ambition.

Winfrey gave an impassioned speech Sunday night at the Golden Globes that has sparked talk about whether she might run for president.
