Lenovo's Standalone VR Headset - The Mirage Solo With Qualcomm Snapdragon VR

Lenovo hopes to start selling the Mirage Solo VR headset for "under $400" in Q2 of this year. That dichotomy represents the two options that consumers have had for VR experiences thus far; either they can sandwich their smartphone in a cardboard or plastic viewer, or break the bank on buying a high-end PC and peripheral attachment like Oculus or HTC Vive.

"It's based on years of investment in simultaneous localization and mapping, and it enables PC-quality positional tracking on a mobile device without the need for any additional external sensors", Google's Clay Bavor explained.

Powered by the Snapdragon 835 VR platform, Lenovo's Mirage Solo comes with a QHD display and weighs only 645 grams. It is the first standalone Daydream headset and it can provide the full VR experience with no extra parts. You get the benefit of a wireless headset, but the dedicated processing power to do things like WorldSense; optical tracking of the world instead of being reliant of fickle accelerometers. Lenovo has, fortunately, come to the rescue with the new Mirage Solo with Daydream standalone headset that promises freedom in more ways than one. There is also a tripod mount on the bottom, so you could theoretically mount it on a tripod and get some really stable images.

VR180 cameras are meant to be simple and straightforward even for those who've never experienced virtual reality. The screen is a 5.5-inch LCD that offers 1280 x 1440 pixels per eye. The first two units out of the gate are the Lenovo Mirage Camera and YI Horizon VR180 Camera. There's also a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Bundle up! Temperatures may drop as low as -5 degrees tonight
Temperatures in Kildare are set to plummet tonight after Met Eireann issued a Status Orange weather warning earlier today. The alert affects Munster, inland areas of Leinster, Connacht, Donegal, Monaghan and Cavan.

Our hands-on time with the Mirage Solo was limited, but it was more than enough to be impressed with what Lenovo and Google have accomplished. It can also be viewed in 2D on mobile or desktop through Google Photos and YouTube. Google claims that they have a more natural sense of depth than 360-degree cameras while being more useful than traditional cameras, though I wouldn't be surprised if most people would struggle to see the point. And, let's face it, Google Daydream isn't exactly the most prolific VR platform out there. Google says that YI will have a camera out this Spring (seen above).

The company is also planning a cellular version of the camera but it is unlikely to release in the United States. Part of that is due to the use of more advanced technology.

Step forward, and the headset will incorporate that motion into the VR experience. Fully compatible with a range of Daydream peripherals like the controller, steering wheel and bats, you can engage on a wide variety of adventures.
