Nigeria political parties to select presidential candidates by October

Abuja - Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission says that presidential and national assembly elections will be held on February 16, 2019.

He also announced November 17 as the last date for the withdrawal or replacement of candidate (s) for president and NASS elections, and December 1 for governorship and state house of assembly elections.

"As a state office, INEC Anambra is not responsible for policy issues, we get our directives from INEC national headquarters and no such directive has been received asking us not to go ahead with Jan.13 re-run in Anambra Central Senatorial District".

This is just as the commission stated that it would make public its budget for the 2019 election on Thursday.

The umpire said primaries for presidential and National Assembly elections will commence on August 18.

Giving details of the approved timetable, he said henceforth, presidential and National Assembly elections will hold on the third Saturday of the month of February of each election year, while governorship and state assembly elections will hold two weeks later.

He added that the conduct of party primaries for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Area Council election has also been scheduled for between September 4 and October 27.

While the last day for campaign is fixed for February 14, 2019 for presidential and national assembly elections, and February 28, 2019 for governorship and state assembly elections, February 16 is the day set aside for the conduct of the presidential and national assembly elections.

"We are going by the orders of the Court of Appeal, and so there will be election for the Anambra Central senatorial rerun on January 13 as scheduled", he said.

Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, the state INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner made the disclosure during a stakeholders' meeting in Awka on Wednesday.

"The Commission is moving away from the culture of quick fix, fire brigade approach to the management of elections in Nigeria".
