An average of 60 percent of the more than 200,000 respondents had smoked a cigarette - and almost 69 percent of the nicotine-curious eventually formed a daily habit. The studies include three studies from the United Kingdom, three from the US, one from Australia and one from New Zealand.

The, was based on 215,000 respondents to eight surveys between 2000 and 2016 contained in the Global Health Data Exchange.

More than two-thirds of people who try just one cigarette may go on to become regular smokers, new research suggests. Lead researcher Professor Peter Hajek from Queen Mary said: "This is the first time that the remarkable hold that cigarettes can establish after a single experience has been documented from such a large set of data".

"We've found that the conversion rate from "first time smoker" to "daily smoker" is surprisingly high", he said.

However, Professor Hajek but refutes a link between daily smoking and vaping.

"Very few non-smokers who try e-cigarettes become daily vapers, while such a large proportion on non-smokers who try conventional cigarettes become daily smokers".

"The UK is seeing a dramatic reduction in smoking at the moment and this tallies with recent findings that only 19 per cent of 11-15 year olds have ever tried a cigarette, so the good news is that we are on the right track". In 2010 nearly 20% of people smoke in the United Kingdom, and in 2017 that number shrunk to 19.3%.

Just over 18% are smokers, compared to 15.5% in England, 16.9% in Wales and 17.7% in Scotland.

Deborah Arnott, chief executive of the charity Action on Smoking and Health, said that this means there should be tighter government regulations on tobacco sales.

They said it confirmed the importance of stopping cigarette experimentation. "Yet the Government is refusing to introduce licencing for tobacco retailers, even though there is strong support for this both from the public and retailers".

Based on survey results from 4 different countries - including the United Kingdom - the findings highlight how addictive tobacco cigarettes are, and the importance of ensuring that stop smoking services are made available to help people quit.

They say that as the surveys used different methods, there was quite a wide margin of error and the "conversion" rate could be anywhere between 60.9% and 76.9%.

"Fortunately, in the United Kingdom, youth smoking rates continue to decline - but we shouldn't be complacent".
