Serena, who is on the cover of US Vogue with her baby, had to have an emergency Caesarean section in September when her heart rate dropped during contractions. Williams has told the world repeatedly that she plays to win and it shows. "It's not a secret that I have my sights on 25", she said.

"That was an fantastic feeling", Serena recalls. Williams insisted she get a CT scan and blood thinners despite the nurse's skepticism.

Serena underwent several surgeries and was unable to get out of bed for six weeks. Her C-section wound, barely beginning to heal, had ruptured due to coughing fits.

In the days that followed Williams, 36, began experiencing shortness of breath and she instantly thought blood clots were the culprit (Williams battled a pulmonary embolism in 2011). During surgery, doctors "found that a large hematoma had flooded her abdomen, the result of a medical Catch-22 in which the potentially lifesaving blood thinner caused hemorrhaging at the site of her C-section. She returned yet again to the OR to have a filter inserted into a major vein, in order to prevent more clots from dislodging and traveling into her lungs". The entire experience left her bedridden for the first six weeks of motherhood.

Her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, 34, said: 'On top of everything she was going through, the feeling of not being able to help made it even harder. "It's that same negative attitude I have on the court sometimes".

"No one talks about the low moments-the pressure you feel, the incredible letdown every time you hear the baby cry", Williams said. She has also pushed back her return to March.

Williams is on the mend and played in her first match since giving birth December 30. "I've broken down I don't know how many times", she added. "Or I'll get angry about the crying, then sad about being angry, and then guilty, like, 'Why do I feel so sad when I have a lovely baby?' The emotions are insane". "I want to teach her that there are no limits".

"There hasn't been a clear number one since I was there".

Williams initially wanted to return to the Australian Open later this month - which she won a year ago while pregnant - but withdrew last week.

"I think sometimes women limit themselves", she said.
