North Korea recently sat down with South Korea for their first diplomatic talks since 2015.

Trump spoke Wednesday with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, and the Blue House readout of the call said the United States president promised he wouldn't attack North Korea while the two Asian nations hold talks. Kim and President Donald Trump have engaged in an increasingly sharp war of words as North Korea's weapons programs advance, each of them belittling the other. "I could give you 20 examples".

Trump did not give a clear answer on whether he had already spoken with Kim - something that either elusive or deemed inconceivable in previous administrations: "I don't want to comment on it". "I just don't want to comment".

Kim, on the other hand, has charged that he would "tame the mentally deranged USA dotard with fire", referring to Trump.

He also welcomed North Korea participating in the Winter Olympics next month in the South, though he acknowledged that Pyongyang might be using the event - as well as recent talks with the country after more than two years - to try to separate Washington and Seoul.

President Trump also discussed NAFTA, saying re-negotiations might bring forth funding for the wall on the USA border with Mexico to stop illegal immigration. On December of 2016, he called Putin "very smart" and a few months later in an interview with Bill O'Reilly, Trump said "I do respect [Putin]". It announced it had postponed its joint military exercises with the United States, an annual event that North Korea believes encroaches on their sovereignty, earlier this month.
