Bannon's departure from Breitbart marks a stunning fall from power for one of Trump's most influential and provocative counselors on both foreign and domestic policy.

In the end, it was Bannon's need to appear powerful that led to his ouster from Breitbart, according to investigative reporter Dave Lindorff.

Republican strategist Cheri Jacobus speculated on Thursday that Bannon was planning to crush Trump in the Russian Federation probe after the president was instrumental in getting Bannon fired from Breitbart and his Sirius XM radio program, as well as convincing the wealthy Mercer family to stop funding Bannon's campaigns.

Since the falling out last week, Bannon has signaled he's willing to help Mueller investigate the White House.

"Bannon and others who "know too much" can be unsafe to a president with a few too many secrets", she wrote. The company announced it is ending its relationship with Bannon, stating its programing agreement is with Breitbart.

Bannon was named chief executive of the Trump campaign two and a half months before Election Day. But Bannon was marginalized in the months before his ouster over Trump's concerns that the top aide was being viewed as an Oval Office puppeteer.

Officials in previous White House administrations have expressed surprise that either man would keep notes, saying that past investigations have shown that those detailed accounts can serve as potentially damaging evidence.

Bannon left the White House in August, and he fell out of favor with Trump and the Republican Party after serving as a major source in the Michael Wolff book Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump White House.

Besides Bannon, he said those witnesses would include Trump's daughter Ivanka.

But when it comes to the future of Breitbart, Lindorff believes Bannon's removal is going to do nothing but hurt the organization.

On Monday, deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley said Bannon's apology did not alter his standing with the president.
