Ford's revamped Edge SUV will be assembled in a plant in southern Ontario, a move a union official said signals jobs will be secure in the region as the automaker invests in new technology.

But Ford, by applying an ST badge to its new high-performance version of the 2019 Edge, has raised an interesting question: Is vehicle performance truly the only essential character quality of an ST, or has the badge come to stand for something more?

Under the hood of the Edge ST will be the same 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6 that's already in the Edge Sport, but in the ST it will be tuned to develop 20 horsepower and 30 lb. -ft. more torque that it does in the Edge Sport. Connected to a quicker-shifting eight-speed automatic transmission, the engine has the ability to route power to the four wheels. A Sport mode calls up optimal engine and transmission performance to hold gears near redline when cornering and will rev-match for downshifts.

Ford will also fit unique 21-inch wheels to the Edge ST, to make sure it's not mistaken for the standard model.

Inside, the Edge ST offers unique seats with additional bolstering, while design cues on the steering wheel, seat backs, and scuff plates remind that this SUV has been given the Ford Performance touch. The eight-speed auto should give the computer more options for channeling power through the standard AWD system.

Ford is going to fit the new brakes in its 2019 redesigned Edge midsize crossover and its 2019 new Ranger midsize pickup. Jonathan Crocker, the Vehicle Engineering Manager for the 2019 Ford Edge, explains that the first-ever Edge ST isn't a "narrow-use" performance vehicle made for the "weekend warrior", like the STs of the past.

The ST has a special grille, side skirts, and dual exhaust outlets. Ford has sold 2 million Edges globally and 1.3 million in North America. The features include Forward Collision Warning and Dynamic Brake Support; Pre-Collision Assist with Pedestrian Detection; BLIS with Cross-Traffic Alert; Lane-Keeping Alert; Lane-Keeping Assist; Auto High Beams; and Hill-Start Assist.

On the technology front, all buyers will get wireless smartphone charging, a Wi-Fi hotspot and the Ford Pass app, which allows owners to start, lock/unlock and locate their Edge. The upgraded Sync 3 system expands on the range of possibilities, and includes an 8.0-inch touch screen and a 12-speaker Bang and Olufsen premium audio.

Designers tweaked interior and exterior components on the Edge, giving the vehicle a wider grille and new fascia, but the refresh focuses most on technology.
