South Korean President Moon Jae-in hoped that the bilateral talks between the two Koreas could pave way for the de-nuclearisation and peace across the Korean peninsula and broader coordination between the USA and South Korea.

Following a meeting with Moon in June, Trump said the "era of strategic patience with the North Korean regime has failed".

Direct talks between the USA president and Kim would be unprecedented. "I have relationships with people". He added that he saw a lot a of good energy. Just days ago, the American commander-in-chief typically warned Kim - whom he had previously called "little rocket man" - that Trump's "nuclear button" is "much bigger and more powerful" than Kim's - "and my button works".

When pressed further whether he has spoken to Kim, Trump responded: "I'm not saying I have or haven't". As a result, the North will send an Olympic delegation to games in Pyeongchang and march in the opening and closing ceremonies with its South Korean counterparts.

Aside from attending the opening ceremony of the Games on February 9, Pence will visit Seoul and Tokyo for talks with leaders of the two USA allies on security and stability of the Korean Peninsula, the White House said.

Pyongyang's sixth-ever nuclear test a year ago and a series of missile launches incurred bolstered global sanctions.

Pyongyang and Seoul held their first high-level meeting on Tuesday in two years.

The United States has continuously stressed that the talks should lead to efforts for the North's complete and verifiable denuclearisation.

"If I were them, I would try", he said, but added "The difference is I'm President, other people aren't".
