AT&T and Verizon have not commented, but Huawei said it would be launching the Mate 10 Pro in the United States without carrier partners. But according to The Wall Street Journal, the carrier backed out of the deal without any explanation.

According to The New York Times, AT&T faced political pressure to go through with the deal with Huawei, with the concern of Congress being in "Chinese espionage".

Reports suggested the appointment was a move to help Huawei penetrate the U.S. market following its failure to partner with U.S. telecom giant AT&T.

There is little question that Chinese deals often attract especially close scrutiny in the US. The deal died after members of both the US Senate and House intelligence committees wrote to the FCC.

In 2012, Huawei and ZTE Corp (000063.SZ) (0763.HK) were the subject of a USA investigation into whether their equipment provided an opportunity for foreign espionage and threatened critical US infrastructure - a link that Huawei has consistently denied. The UK's security watchdog also anxious about a telecoms equipment deal between BT and Huawei.
