Travel warning: Station closed as fire crews tackle huge blaze

Fire appliances outside Nottingham railway station which has been evacuated and services passing through cancelled after a fire broke out.

Incident commander Bryn Coleman from Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service said fire crews were inside the building tackling the flames.

Nottingham station has been evacuated after a large blaze broke out.

Videos and pictures showed a significant blaze in the main concourse of the building when the fire began, and smoke billowing from the roof.

British Transport Police said it was an "ongoing incident" and said the station was "unlikely" to be open by Saturday.

Station manager at Notts Fire and Rescue Craig Day Tweeted to say: "I would like to say a massive thank you to Nottingham #rapidreliefteam that have been supporting the emergency services and all the agencies working hard at #NottinghamTrainStation".

Flames were seen coming from the station's roof and smoke filled the foyer, prompting the building's evacuation.

The situation is so severe that East Midlands can not yet predict when the station will be up and running again, with trains both in and out of Nottingham cancelled.

Trains from London St Pancras will terminate at East Midlands Parkway, while trains from Cardiff Central, Birmingham New Street and Matlock will terminate at Derby until further notice. She said there were no reported casualties.

A spokesman for Nottinghamshire Police said: "The roads around Nottingham Railway Station have been closed because of a fire at the station".

Alex Hayman of Which? said: "Frustrated passengers who face yet more disruption to their services will be disappointed to find that their rights to compensation as a result of a strike are surprisingly complicated".

"People should check before they travel and maybe it would be wise just to think about those alternative arrangements - but we are very optimistic about the level of service we can put on".
