First, consider the team the Jayhawks are already chasing ...

West Virginia has fared pretty well without one of the best small forwards in the Big 12. The 15-1 WVU Mountaineers are undefeated on U.S. soil and are now number two in the country; their highest ranking in 60 years. It was a game in which Bob Huggins' team converted just nine of its 36 two-point tries, but again, it was a win.

Arizona State 77, Oregon St. 75: Shannon Evans scored seven of his 22 points in a late 10-0 run and No. 11 Arizona State held off Oregon State. They average 13 turnovers a game. The Horned Frogs have been bad in high-pressure situations this season, a surprising development for one of the most experienced groups in the conference. "And the way we played early on, they didn't need to, really". That has had a big impact on this team's shot volume. It would be hard, but it's possible. It's not enough to drop the Red Raiders, but it shows some separation between the top two and the rest of the field.

Behind Carter in scoring was Ahmad, who made his season debut after he was ruled ineligible for game competition for the first half of the regular season for not meeting NCAA eligibility requirements. He was the team's second-leading scorer last season behind, and Ahmad should help the Mountaineers get more second chances on offense.

Ahmad has been practicing with the team while sitting out, and he should be well-adjusted when he returns to the floor. But don't sleep on this Red Raiders squad, who might be the most balanced team of the group.

For a few minutes Tuesday night, it seemed like Chris Beard was about to take command of the Big 12 title race.

Kansas 73, Kansas State 72: Devonte Graham had 23 points, Malik Newman hit the go-ahead foul shots with 15 seconds left and No. 12 Kansas held on to beat Kansas State in a back-and-forth affair. A win would have given the Raiders road victories at both OU and KU. Texas Tech won, 90-54.

"You'll just have to wait and see", Huggins said during Thursday's Big 12 teleconference.

Kansas can prove that the road to the title still goes through Lawrence come Monday ... That means a reasonable schedule awaits Scott Drew's team, including games against Iowa State, Oklahoma State and Kansas State surrounding a trip to face KU at Allen Fieldhouse. "He makes huge plays for them".

"We're going to have close games", he said.

What makes this even more exciting is that Zach Smith, the senior forward for Texas Tech still has more to give, as he's still dealing with a nagging ankle injury.

Speaking of streaks, KU hasn't won in Morgantown since 2013.

Although the Red Raiders play a lot of guards, they struggle at times taking care of the ball. Maybe this is the year that streak ends.

"Ive got a great friend who this week told me, ‘Prince today, frog tomorrow, ?" Texas Tech is promoting the game as a "Red Out" with fans going to 15,000-seat United Supermarkets Arena encouraged to wear red. Smith leads in rebounds with 4.4 while Evans tops in assists with 1.4 per game. Last week the Mountaineers went 2-0 with home wins over #7 Oklahoma and Baylor. It's the Big 12.
