Some delays and cancellations to rail and air travel are likely, the Met Office warned.

A series of travel warnings are in place as up to 15cm of snow is expected to blanket parts of the UK.

"A spell of snow is likely across parts of northern England and southern Scotland on Friday morning", said a Met Office spokesman.

The RAC said it expects to attend "in the region of one breakdown every 10 seconds through the course of Friday".

The Met Office issued its warnings today over the snow, ice and gale force winds, as a torrent of turbulent weather sweeps in from the east.

The area affected is towards the north of the county, including the M23 and around the M25.

"These larger amounts are more likely over the highest ground".

Economists hope the fall in inflation will continue, with prices now rising more quickly than wages. The declining inflation rate would be good news for the government in a pre-election year.

"There is a possibility that some rural communities could become temporarily cut off. Power cuts may also occur".

Public transport may also be affected by the snow.

Snowfalls overnight on Monday brought a white Christmas to parts of the region, and some of that snow is still to be seen in scattered patches.

The rain, sleet and snow should clear much of northern England through the day, though may linger along North Sea coasts and the snow looks to linger from the central belt of Scotland northwards on the northern flank of that low sliding east to the south across the Borders.

"Those that do head out should make sure that their vehicle is equipped and ready to cope with the wintry conditions - that means properly inflated tyres with plenty of tread, and oil, coolant and screenwash all at the right levels".

Snow in West Yorkshire is causing significant problems, as is the wind and heavy rain in the south west of England.
