Tottenham v Southampton: Confirmed line-ups as Harry Kane attempts to break record

Spurs hammered Southampton 5-2 on Boxing Day and Kane sent statisticians into over-drive by hitting a hat-trick in what was his final outing of 2017.

Kane's hat-trick against Burnley took him level with the record, earning widespread praise from team-mates and opponents alike, and his manager was momentarily stumped when asked if he would dare substitute his centre-forward at Wembley if the 37th goal proved elusive.

In the last few seasons, Kane has proved the league's most feared finisher.

Shearer said: "If they don't win anything in the next two years, Kane could have a big decision to make and there will be no lack of suitors with big money wanting him".

"It doesn't surprise us because every day we see how he works, his determination, how professional he is, and that can only be good for him".

With much of the prematch build up focusing on Kane's quest to break Shearer's record, Spurs wasted little time giving its leading scorer the chance.

France's Macron visits Calais amid pressure over migration crisis

Saints have won just three of their 18 Premier League visits to Tottenham, most recently in May 2016 when Steven Davis scored both of Southampton's goals. They are fantastic players here.

If Kane can score two goals at Wembley, he will overtake the likes of Lionel Messi and Edinson Cavani in the goalscoring charts for the calendar year. The former England worldwide had scored 36 goals for Blackburn Rovers in 1995.

It also means Kane will end 2017 on 56 goals for club and country, the first player outside of Ronaldo and Messi to finish as Europe's top scorer since 2009. "I've had a great 2017 and hopefully, for me, it's an improved 2018 and I get even better". I came into this game hoping I could get a couple and take it to Southampton, when I had the three I wanted to get the fourth.

Although it is Kane's goal tally that - understandably - get the most attention, he is far from a one-dimensional player.

The hat-trick was completed with a delicious left-footed chip to banish any cries of "tap-in merchant" from any non-believers out there.

Other high-scoring Premier League stars over a calendar year include Robin van Persie, who notched 35 for Arsenal in 2011, and Thierry Henry, who struck 34 times for Arsenal in 2004.
