Two people killed, three trapped in horrific multi-vehicle crash near Dubbo

A truck slammed into six stationary vehicles on the Newell Highway, killing two and injuring ten others.

NSW Police Superintendent Peter McKenna said all vehicles involved in the crash were travelling in the same direction. Eight people were injured in the smash, including a two-year-old, which the authorities described as "absolute carnage".

It is believed four cars, a B-double and utility were stopped at a road works site when they were hit from behind by the semi-trailer.

Two people died at the scene and eight people were taken to Dubbo Base Hospital.

"This is an absolute horror", she said. [The truck] came on to traffic. We had a worker collapse with shock.

Ms Pavey said the greater number of trucks on the road had resulted in heavy vehicle crashes in NSW increasing by 45 per cent in 2017 compared to 2016.

Among those injured was a two-year-old girl who sustained leg lacerations, a 43-year-old woman who suffered a broken arm and a 26-year-old woman with facial injuries.

An 18-year-old man was freed from his vehicle and another person was freed from a truck after they were both trapped for more than four hours.

'One vehicle is believed to be completely crushed under a truck, ' she said.
