Schumer Reports 'Some Progress' After Meeting With Trump

Trump tweeted that the meeting was "excellent", but by Friday evening, negotiations had appeared to have broken down entirely in the Senate. Funding for the government runs out at midnight, if Congress fails to pass a spending deal. "So we'll all get blamed but mostly the Republican administration will get blamed - as they should".

In a dramatic late-night session, Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell left voting open despite appearing to fall well short of the 60 votes needed to keep alive legislation that would fund the government through February 16.

Schumer did not address reporters as he left the building.

The Republican-controlled Senate's bid to avert a U.S. government shutdown is teetering on the brink of collapse as it races against a midnight deadline.

As the government shutdown inches closer and closer, lawmakers are busy pointing fingers at who's to blame for the impasse.

The House recessed on Friday for a week-long break, but members were warned they could be called back for votes.

A GOP aide said McCarthy won't attend the World Economic Forum in Davos if the government shuts down.

On Wednesday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell publicly deplored that he did not know what kind of funding legislation the President would support and anxious that the Senate was "spinning our wheels".

President Donald Trump will not leave for a weekend at his Palm Beach estate unless a government shutdown is averted.

Trump dodged any talk of a shutdown during a Rose Garden rally with anti-abortion leaders on Friday afternoon, though he highlighted his looming anniversary.

Thirty-one percent of respondents said they would blame Democrats, and 10 percent said they would blame all three.

Make no mistake about it: Senate Democrats are the only ones standing in the way of a fully funded government and a reauthorized health insurance program for children. He expressed openness to extending the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, only to reject a bipartisan proposal.

The Congress is discussing immigration reform legislation and a long-term budget deal which will set a spending framework for fiscal year 2018 and 2019.
