The rare astronomical event where three special occurrences of the Moon - lunar eclipse, blue moon and supermoon - coincide was last observed 152 years ago in 1866.

The last time the planets aligned this way was nearly 152 years ago in 1866, according to the Science Centre Singapore. A blood moon happens during a total lunar eclipse when the moon takes on a reddish hue.

The "Super Blue Blood Moon" will last for about 76 minutes and will present moon in form of an orange ring during its peak phase. During a total lunar eclipse, the moon will appear in red colour, thus, it's often called blood moon. In other words, Earth is directly between the Sun and the moon.

Since the Moon orbits Earth in a slightly elliptical path, the distance between the two bodies varies.

For another hour or so, the moon will continue drifting out of the Earth's umbral shadow, until it exits completely at 7:11 a.m. PST.

"Weather permitting, the West Coast, Alaska and Hawaii will have a spectacular view of totality from start to finish", says NASA lunar blogger Gordon Johnston.

The last time a total lunar eclipse coincided with a blue moon in Taiwan was on December 30, 1982, the museum said. A blue moon is a rare, but not as rare as the saying, "once in a blue moon" implies.

All India People's Science Network (AIPSN) is organising the Copper Moon Campaign for viewing of the 'super blue blood moon eclipse' happening on January 31, 2018. A lunar cycle (new moon to new moon) takes 29.53 days, as opposed to the average 30 to 31 days in a calendar month.

On a lighter note, for astrology buffs, when the super blue moon doubles as a lunar eclipse, it's a time of "lunar lunacy", Elite Daily reports. It will be visible from much of North America, as well as northeastern Europe, Russia, Asia and Australia. In Kuching, moonrise will begin at 6.43pm, while in Kota Kinabalu it will begin at 6.14pm.

The next lunar eclipse observable in Hong Kong will occur on July 28, which will also be a total lunar eclipse.
