The 26-year-old Cook broke through for his maiden victory at the RSM Classic in Georgia in November and said he expected that experience would hold him in good stead on Sunday when everyone will play the same course, the Stadium at PGA West. The 23-year-old Spaniard - the top-ranked player in the field at No. 3 in the world - played the first seven holes in 6 under on a sunny morning so comfortable he shed his light sweater halfway through his warmup on the driving range.

Rahm shot a five-under 67 Sunday to get into the play-off.

The Waterford man shot a final round, bogey-free 70 to finish on 17 under, five shots behind the playoff mark of 22 under. The first six combined attempts at a winning birdie missed, then Rahm, who once lost a 10-hole playoff as an amateur in Spain, finally converted after a clutch approach shot from the right rough, just before the sun set behind the Santa Rosa mountains. "I hit a lot of bad putts today, hit a lot of edges, but lucky the one I needed to make went in".

"Tournaments like this build character", Rahm said. "It's again - I've said it many times - I never thought I was going to be at this point in my life right now". He has played the 12 par 5s in 13 under with an eagle and 11 birdies. At 10 under, the former Arizona State player bested his four-day total of 9 under a year ago in the CareerBuilder when he tied for 34th in his first start in the event. "But there's a couple birdie putts, like the one on 14, that, if I'm being quite honest, I did not hit the line I wanted and it still went in dead center".

Defending his title at Torrey Pines will be Rahm who justified his favourite tag on Sunday. "Just hitting a lot of greens and making some putts".

The PGA Tour has already seen two playoff finishes this year.

Garcia, one of 78 players who returned to the course just after dawn to complete their second rounds, was on the 10th hole of his third round when the warning siren was sounded to abruptly end play for the day.

"I've been playing well all year, had a great season last year and I'm rolling it over right into this, into the fall and now starting the year out", Landry said.

Adam Hadwin (68), Martin Piller (70) and John Huh (66) tied for third at 20 under, and Kevin Chappell (67) and Scott Piercy (70) were another stroke back. "So second place finish, we'll take it and move on next week".

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Rory McIlroy fired a 7-under 65 Saturday in the third round of the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship to sit one shot behind leaders Ross Fisher and Thomas Pieters.

"I think that tonight the nerves, the butterflies, all that will kind of be a little less", Cook said.
