Suspect in custody after school shooting in Italy, Texas

School and law enforcement officials confirmed that the incident took place in the high school's cafeteria but said they did not know how many students were in the cafeteria at the time. The school received an accountability rating of "met standard". It has a population of about 2,000 and only one high school. The dropout rate was 1.1%.

A 16-year-old male suspect was taken into custody, per the Ellis County Sheriff's Office.

Italy ISD Superintendent Lee Joffre said the 16-year-old boy left the building immediately after opening fire in the school cafeteria about 7:50 a.m. Monday.

It's unclear what led to the shooting. A female student, 15, was shot and airlifted to the hospital. He also informed the community that counselors will be provided on campus to speak with students. "The suspect is in custody and no longer a threat". Neither knew the girl's condition, and Parkland spokeswoman April Foran said she could give no information.
