Casey Affleck Withdraws as Oscar Presenter for Best Actress

Casey Affleck has withdrawn from this year's Oscars ceremony, where, if the Academy chose to follow tradition, he would have presented the best actress award.

The 42-year-old actor was due to present the award at the upcoming awards ceremony to keep up the longstanding tradition of the previous year's Best Actor recipient - which Casey picked up for his work on "Manchester By The Sea" - handing out the gong to the following year's Best Actress.

Affleck's decision comes amid an anti-sexual harassment movement that's swept Hollywood and other industries. The allegations were made in lawsuits filed against Affleck by producer Amanda White and director of photography Magdalena Gorka and were settled prior to the release of the film, which starred Joaquin Phoenix.

Louis C.K. has said that the allegations against him are true, but Weinstein, Spacey, Lauer, and Rose have denied some or all of the accusations, or said that they do not remember the alleged encounters.

"He was in a no-win situation, with all the attention surrounding the #MeToo movement".

Actor Casey Affleck, victor of Best Actor for "Manchester by the Sea", poses in the press room during the 89th Annual Academy Awards at Hollywood & Highland Center on February 26, 2017.

But his nomination and win a year ago were scrutinized after the actor was accused by two women of inappropriate behavior during the filming of "I'm Still Here" in 2010, so it's not surprising the actor wouldn't want to appear onstage in the coming weeks in light of the recent #MeToo movement.

Casey Affleck arrives at the Oscars in 2017.

The Oscars will take place March 4. However, Affleck's publicist announced Thursday that the Manchester By the Sea star isn't even planning on attending the awards. The specter of Affleck presenting would have created controversy.

Earlier: The Oscars are better off without a James Franco nomination.
