And while its user growth has slowed, the company hadn't made that a priority just yet. Snapchat had not growing as quickly as investors had hoped, causing questions about the app's ability to attract a broad audience beyond is base of young, digital savvy users.

Snap, which makes the Snapchat app, has been struggling to stay ahead of Facebook and Instagram.

According to eMarketer, Snap has seen some ad progress, but it's share of the market is tiny. CNN, for example, launched a daily news show on Snapchat back in August, but cancelled it shortly after when it wasn't making enough money.

The silver lining in a hard 12-month period for Snap is that it continues to grow both users and revenue despite Facebook's ruthless attempts to demolish it. Facebook's copies have certainly hurt the company, but they have not killed it yet. In the last quarter, Snap lost $443 million, up from the $124 million it lost in Q3 2016. Snap added almost 9 million daily active users in the last quarter, the most since the third quarter of 2016, pumping its daily user base to 187 million.

Still, it was far below its 2016 peak just above 10 percent, when low oil prices hurt energy firms. That represented a 66 percent fall from its record high of $19,666, touched on December 17.
