Pornhub, Reddit, Twitter Crack Down on AI-Generated 'Deepfake' Porn

The move follows similar bans by other popular sites against videos that use community-made software to superimpose the faces of female celebrities into existing pornographic footage. In a statement published on the site, one Reddit administrator explained that the company has implemented new site-wide rules specifically against such content, whereas before those rules were part of a larger single policy covering multiple facets of unacceptable content. Deepfakes were popularized on a Reddit subform where they gained notoriety over the last several months. We saw a creepy example of this fake footage tech a year ago via the University of Washington, where researchers made a tool that uses AI to generate a video of someone "saying" something they didn't actually say.

Corey Price, PornHub's vice president, told Mashable: "Users have started to flag content like this, and we are taking it down as soon as we encounter the flags".

Fueling the fire was a user-created application, called which lets users create their own deepfakes videos via an easy-to-use app that can be downloaded directly to your desktop computer. "We do not tolerate any nonconsensual content on the site, and we remove all said content as soon as we are made aware of it", the spokesperson told Motherboard. "We have investigated these servers and shut them down immediately".

But the tools are being used to create media without the subject's consent, which is not only poor form to say the least, but could also damage the person's reputation and significantly propagate the spread of fake news and online bullying.

And, as Motherboard notes, people today are constantly uploading photos of themselves to various social media platforms, meaning someone could use such a technique to harass someone they know.

Pornhub states that it doesn't allow "any nonconsensual content" on its platform and has deemed "deepfake" content to fall under this category.
