49ers sign Jimmy Garoppolo to $137.5 million deal

San Francisco had won just one game all season when Garoppolo became the quarterback but they proceeded to reel off five wins in succession to finish the season.

Jimmy Garoppolo was the New England Patriots backup quarterback. Now, his salary has several zeroes to match the one in his career loss column. The preference was always going to be getting a long-term deal done and that's exactly what they did, to the tune of five years and $137.5 million.

Garoppolo, who turned 26 in November, was traded from New England to San Francisco on October 31, 2017 in exchange for a second round draft pick. That run came after the 49ers started the season a dismal 1-10.

Garappolo went 5-0 in the five games he started for the 49ers, throwing six touchdowns and five interceptions while completing 67% of his passes for 1,542 yards. Which is to say they believe Garoppolo is the type of quarterback who can elevate the players around him and be the focal point of a team that competes for championships on a consistent basis.

"We want Jimmy to be a Niner for a long, long time", Lynch said on January 2.

A swift resolution to the contract negotiations comes comfortably ahead of free agency next month, as well as the franchise-tag window from February 20 to March 6.

Pence to visit memorial for torpedoed warship, underscoring danger of North Korea
Protesters say North Korea, which only confirmed its participation last month, has been allowed to hijack the Pyeongchang Games. But privately, officials said Pence expressed concern to Moon about his more conciliatory tone toward North Korea.

Garoppolo was already expected to be well-paid after reaching the end of his rookie contract, but few expected the 49ers to make him the highest-paid player in the league.

It then would be reasonable to suspect that his deal would top Garoppolo's contract, just as Garoppolo's topped Stafford's and Stafford's topped Carr's.

Although he has started only seven National Football League games - two with the New England Patriots in 2016 and five with the 49ers in 2017 - he has a ideal record in those starts, having won all seven.

The NFL rules for payment of playoff bonuses to those no longer on the 53-man roster maintain that for a player to receive that money from his former team he must have spent at least eight games with the original team and either be a free agent or be on the roster of a team in the opposite conference.

Even while making it rain on their quarterback, this deal won't hinder San Francisco from making other moves to improve overall.

"We've asked him to do a lot of things here in this last month that he hasn't done before, like our bootlegs, some of our play action", Shanahan said after beating the Rams.
