NI Weather: Warning for heavy rain then snow and ice

Connacht, alongside counties of Cavan, Monaghan and Donegal have been given rain warnings, registered as status yellow as well.

The east will be brighter but it will be cold too, with temperatures only hitting a maximum of 5C.

On Sunday night, wintry shower will continue, with accumulations of snow in places.

A status yellow wind warning has been issued for the entire provinces of Munster and Leinster, as well as Galway, with southwest to west winds expected to reach mean speeds of between 55 and 65 km/h, with gusts up to 110 km/h possible on Saturday afternoon and evening.

Parents should be braced for a half term washout as heavy rain and freezing temperatures look set to hit the United Kingdom next week, the Met Office has warned.

Sunday will be very cold with more wintry showers on the way particularly in parts of Connacht.

Rain will develop in the west and will spread eastwards to all areas overnight. Rain, sleet and snow will fall in many areas during the evening.

Temperatures are likely to drop to around zero overnight.

Saturday night will be windy, with wintry showers developing overnight. Frost and icy patches will develop also. Feeling bitterly cold with strong westerly winds.

However, the outlook for the weekend is for more icy conditions with wintry showers, ice and frost expected.

Showers and blustery weather is forecast for the north-west, where the highest temperatures us expected to be around 5C, with the south-west's at about 7C.

Wednesday morning will be wet with rain and sleet, heavy at times.
