ANC to hold special meeting as pressure mounts on Zuma

The period from then until national elections in 2019 would not count as a term; South African presidents can hold office for a maximum of two terms.

The report stated that Zuma and ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa are secretly negotiating the deal. "For now, I afford the ANC the opportunity to reflect within its own highest decision-making body, the NEC".

Some stark options were to be placed on the table.

Ramaphosa, Zuma's expected successor, set out a policy agenda for the year in his nationally televised speech, which marked the beginning of commemorations of the centenary of Nelson Mandela's birth on July 18, 1918. Ramaphosa also led South Africa's delegation to the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland last month, mixing with heads of state and trying to assure investors that the country is emerging from the turmoil that briefly sent it into recession past year.

Though cornered, Zuma has not been easy to placate as he has pondered post-term problems, mainly legal in nature.

There was much more to Ramaphosa's chat with the caucus than that as this is a key grouping in the saga of Zuma's exit. There were calls to move the no-confidence vote up to next week. The idea seemed to be keeping Zuma in office for a while longer so a smooth transition to a new president could be arranged.

Ramaphosa spoke on Sunday at the Grand Parade in Cape Town.

The Guptas and Zuma have denied any wrongdoing.

He said delaying the matter had the potential to polarise both the organisation and the country. Critics have expressed concern that Zuma may be requesting immunity from prosecution in exchange for his resignation.

I would have thought Mangala will be the less serious of the two injuries. "It was not because we were totally outplayed and not because Zaha did not play".

Instead, Zuma was told his struggle credentials would count in his favour - but he would still have to be tried.

Insiders had expected Zuma to resign by the end of the weekend, but with the calling of the special NEC, it now does not appear likely that he will do so.

Zuma is also believed to want extended protection for his large family. "This has delayed a transition of power, but he has got limited time left".

First Lady Madiba-Zuma, however, who clearly supports her husband's stance to remain in power until next year will have none of these antics to remove her from the stately home as well and cautioned against "picking a fight with someone who is not fighting you". The two have quarreled in recent months, with Ramaphosa publicly criticizing Zuma's decision previous year to fire his respected finance minister, Pravin Gordhan, and his failure to tackle corruption.

Upon his release, Mandela entered Cape Town triumphantly, accompanied by his former wife Winnie Mandela and members of the African National Congress.

"He will resign or, if he is stupid about this, he will be forced out with nothing".
