The No. 3 seeds would be Clemson, Texas Tech, Michigan State and UNC.

This is just the 2nd season the committee released their preliminary ranking for the Top 16 seeds for the NCAA Tournament.

Xavier (23-3) and Purdue (23-4) would get No. 1 seeds if the NCAA men's basketball tournament started Sunday, according to a brackets preview released by the selection committee. "They have a great strength of schedule and they're 10-1 from home".

"Virginia's a dominant defensive team, but they're much better offensively than they've been", committee chair and Creighton athletic director Bruce Rasmussen said during the selection show. The Tigers, who extended their SEC lead to two games with a win at Georgia on Saturday, are sitting pretty as the fifth overall seed thanks to a almost flawless non-conference schedule and seven true road wins, including five in league play.

The Red Raiders were projected to be a part of the East region alongside first-seed Villanova, second-seed Duke and fourth-seed Ohio State.

Virginia leads the ACC race by two games in the loss column over Clemson (9-3) and resumes league competition Tuesday at Miami.

The other Big Ten teams to make the cut were Purdue (No. 1 seed for the West Region) and Ohio State (No. 4 seed for the East Region). The committee has Duke No. 7, which would give it a 2 seed, and North Carolina No. 12, which would be a three seed.

The committee appears to be putting lots of faith in the Jayhawks down the stretch.
