More cold, wintry precipitation could be expected this weekend

The weather service's extended forecast calls for an overcast weekend with more scattered showers likely into next week as well.

The church holds concerts the second Sunday of every month at 6:30 p.m.

Rain started to set in this afternoon from the southwest. During the rest of the night, the snow will begin to move northward.

The other concern with the cold air is ice jams forming on area rivers and streams.

Track the storms using the American-Statesman's weather radar. There will be periods of light rain and drizzle throughout the day. Windy, with a west wind 24 to 30 miles per hour, with gusts as high as 41 miles per hour. The National Weather Service in Topeka says 1 to 2 inches of snowfall will be possible along and north of Interstate 35, withe only a dusting up to 1 inch of snow southeast of I-35.

The snow is slowly progressing southeastward, and it is heavy at times. Partly cloudy, with a low around 18. During the day in the metro Buffalo area, expect a couple of inches of snow. Northeast wind around 10 miles per hour. An area of surface low pressure will go from near Jackson, MS to Lexington, KY this evening through Sunday morning. Behind the low, our wind direction returns to a northwesterly flow (10-15mph). Chance of precipitation is 70%.

Confidence in the amount of precipitation is "somewhat low", the meteorologist added. North wind 9 to 11 miles per hour. Chance of precipitation is 20 percent. New snow and sleet accumulation of less than a half inch possible. "The better chance for some showers is going to be towards Sunday".

Cloud cover will hang around throughout our Sunday morning, but the sky will gradually clear that afternoon.
