In September 2017, soon after the shocking announcement, the Royal Danish House announced that Prince Henrik was diagnosed with dementia.

Throughout his marriage to Margrethe, the prince consort battled repeatedly with the limits of his role.

Prince Consort Henrik died in his sleep with Margrethe and the couple's two sons at his side, according to the statement.

The sometimes-controversial husband of the Queen Margrethe of Denmark died at Fredensborg Castle, late Tuesday, a statement from royal officials has confirmed.

Henrik has two sons with the queen, Crown Prince Frederik and Prince Joachim.

He spent his early years in Vietnam where his father, a count, looked after the family businesses.

He studied law and politics at Paris-Sorbonne University as well as at the French National Institute for Oriental Languages and Civilizations. He also studied Chinese and Vietnamese at the Ecole Nationale des Langues Orientales.

He met Margrethe - then crown princess - while stationed in London as a diplomat.

In his memoirs he said he felt an attraction for the young woman, and noted that she was good at keeping the conversation flowing.

He previously said: "My wife has decided that she would like to be Queen, and I'm very pleased with that".

After a 2009 Danish referendum supported the equality of the sexes in the royal succession, Henrik remarked: "I hope that men will be as equal as girls", spurring further debate and briefly finding support in parliament in favour of allowing him the title of king.

As of 2005 he was addressed as prince consort.

He made headlines past year when he claimed in an interview that he didn't want to be buried alongside his wife because she never made him King Consort. She was crowned queen five years later.
