Iran-India relations: A history of peaceful collaboration

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday said India and Iran have a "common stance" in effectively dealing with terrorism and extremism, and called for concerted regional efforts to deal with the challenge.

India and Iran on Saturday signed nine pacts, the most consequential of which will allow India to lease part of the strategic Chabahar port, near the mouth of the Gulf of Oman.

A joint statement by India and Iran after Rouhani's delegation-level talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India reaffirms its support for full and effective implementation of the JCPOA.

Later, addressing a joint press conference with the Iranian president, Modi said both countries wanted to expand bilateral ties and cooperation in economic development. "If we are signing the pact then we will adhere to it, till the last breath", he said.

"The Iranian side welcomed the investment of Indian side in setting up plants in sectors such as fertilizers, petrochemicals and metallurgy in Chabahar free trade zone on terms mutually beneficial to the concerned parties", the statement said.

Maritime agreement on Chabahar Port and document on Shahid Beheshti port. Iran and India can reap optimum benefit from this mutually cooperation, Dr Rouhani added. India and Iran are now engaged in trying to reach an agreement over India developing Iran's Farzad-B gas field.

"I am very optimistic about the future of the relationship between the two countries and our companies especially for oil and gas fields development", the Iranian Oil Minister said after the meeting.

Dr.Rouhani said the Chabahar seaport would benefit Afghanistan and Central Asia.

Rouhani said it was incumbent on the countries' politicians to deepen the historical amity between the nations in all cultural, economic, and commercial areas.

Modi said that Chabahar Port offered "a golden gateway" for landlocked Afghanistan.

The two countries to boost cooperation in key areas of security, trade and energy.

On the timelines, he said, "We agreed that next week the Indian team will come to Tehran for finalising some of the points".

Tehran and New Delhi on Saturday signed agreements including an $85 million United States dollars accord for the development of Chabahar Port in south-eastern Iran.

In 2013, the U.S. continued insistence that India should abstain from buying Iranian crude and that New Delhi should completely freeze its economic and financial transactions with Iran.

He said the U.S. sought to control the lives of Iranians and even tried to stop the 1979 Islamic revolution.
