Israeli tank fires into Gaza after blast near soldiers

Already beleaguered by Israel's decade-old blockade of the strip, Gazans were made to suffer even more a year ago when the Palestinian Authority, run by Fatah, imposed harsh new restrictions in a power struggle with Hamas, its archrival. Two other soldiers are in moderate condition.

GAZA CITY, Palestinian Territories: Israeli jets struck the Gaza Strip on Saturday (Feb 17) after four soldiers were wounded when an improvised explosive device blew up along the border with the Palestinian enclave. Israel later hit several targets in Gaza, including a terror tunnel that Hamas was building in northern Gaza.

Israeli warplanes bombarded multiple locations across the besieged Gaza Strip on Saturday evening, according to local sources.

Israeli Army Spokesperson Brigadier General Ronen Manelis described the explosion as very serious and said that it undermines what he called "stability in the region".

"Hamas is responsible for the event and its consequences, as well as for everything happening in and out of the Gaza Strip, above and below the ground", it added. It remains unclear if any soldiers were harmed in the attack.
