In what we can only hope is more treat than ominous foreshadowing, Netflix beamed up the premiere episode of its upcoming Lost in Space reboot to astronauts aboard the International Space Station. The official description introduces the series as follows: "Stranded light years from their destination, the Robinson family must come together to survive".

The reboot, much like the original, is set 30 years in the future. Toby Stephens (Die Another Day) and Molly Parker (House of Cards) play the lead parents. While the original has been remembered for its bright colors, fantasy-inspired plots, and alliterative insults for robots, this new series looks like it'll take itself rather seriously. So, while the Robinsons are in for a perilous journey ahead, it seems as though filming on the the new show went a bit smoother.

The Lost in Space remake hails from Dracula Untold writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who will executive-produce with Kevin Burns of Synthesis Entertainment, as well as Neil Marshall and Marc Helwig of Legendary TV-based Applebox. Soon up, they end up living a much different life than they expected when they're thrown off course and onto a lost planet, where they're forced to "survive in a unsafe alien environment, light-years from their original destination", as Netflix puts it. While Netflix recently released its dark, gritty cyberpunk show Altered Carbon, Lost in Space will be aimed more at family audiences.

Full disclosure: I am a fan of all things Irwin Allen, and the original "Lost in Space" series was high on my list of must-watch TV as a kid. Meanwhile the addition of Parker Posey to cast, as the nefarious Dr. Smith, hinted that the minds behind the new series were at least partially in the right place. Plus, Ignacio Serricchio joins the crew as Don West, a charming contractor who smuggles luxury goods on the side.
