Two Russian curlers have given back their Winter Olympic bronze medals after one of them, Aleksandr Krushelnitckii, tested positive for the banned substance meldonium.

Although Russia is technically banned from the Pyeongchang Games, there were 168 Russian athletes cleared by the International Olympic Committee to compete.

Also, Krushelnitskii and his wife Anastasia Bryzgalova have agreed to surrender their medals, according to the Russian curling federation.Dmitry Svishchev, the president of the federation expressed the hope that the surrender of the medal is the temporary measure.

The Russian curler, who tested positive for a banned substance known as meldonium, admitted to violating anti-doping rules in Pyeongchang.

"'You'd never know if it was on objective or by accident", USA curling captain John Shuster said earlier this week, according to The Associated Press, "but obviously that's been banned for a year and a half and I can't imagine that that was something that happened on goal". "I believe that a hearing would be useless under the current rules".

"This incident has cast a shadow over our sport and the incredible mixed doubles curling competition that had its debut here at the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018", the WCF said in a statement.

On Thursday, CAS confirmed that Krushelnitckii has been disqualified from the Games and accepted a provisional suspension.

Olympic Athletes from Russian Federation confirmed on Tuesday a criminal investigation into Krushelnitzky's failed test has been launched.

Krushelnitsky and Bryzgalova became the first Russians to participate in the Pyeongchang Games when they competed in a preliminary-round game on February 8, the day before the opening ceremony.

The delegation said the concentration of meldonium found in Krushelnitsky's sample suggested he would not have derived a benefit.
