Apple is working on two new versions of its AirPods

This year's upgrades to the hearables will allow users to summon the digital assistant of Apple, Siri, without having to physically tap the AirPods.

It's said that the company intends to frequently update the AirPods with new hardware features much like it does with its other wearable devices like the Apple Watch. The site's sources say Apple is now working on the next two models, to be released in 2018 and 2019. Most importantly, the 2018 AirPods, known internally as B288, will also have hands-free voice command feature, according to Bloomberg.

The updated AirPods are also likely to feature Apple's W2 wireless chip, a component that debuted in the Apple Watch 3 a year ago. The original AirPods had the W1 inside, while the Apple Watch had the W2.

The Airpods also offered the ability to use them with non-Apple devices via standard Bluetooth connectivity. The idea was to replace the traditional wired headphones with a wireless headphones.

Another point worth noting is the revelation of an upgraded wireless chip. Similar products followed from Google, Sony Corp., Samsung Electronics Co., Motorola, and Bose. With the second generation, Apple will be adding Qi wireless charging, a standard that the company began supporting a year ago with the iPhone 8 and iPhone X. Beyond that, though, we could be in for an even more substantial upgrade to the AirPods themselves later this year.
